The multi tool can be defined in its simplest form as a simple pocket knife. This is a one or two blade tool that will fit in your pocket. As technology has evolved and improved and the needs have changed, so have the functions and designs of the pocket knife. The multi tool now comes equipped with numerous implements and blades. The uses of the multi tool are endless and include wire crimpers, pliers, scissors, and tweezers. When you decide which one to buy, you should consider how many tools you really need, its overall quality, and the price.
The cost of a brand name multi tool is considerable more than that of a generic brand. However, they will frequently have superior quality and a better warranty that will give you years of use. The Leatherman brand of multi tool was one of the first in the line and is a recognizable brand among. They offer numerous models that range in price from the low $20s to over $100.
These multi tools are made from stainless steel, come with either a leather holder or a cloth and usually offer over 20 tools in each multi tool. In the $20 range the Leatherman tool has a Phillips head screwdriver, tweezers, nail file, and a bottle opener. Another Leatherman that sells for about $60 has tool for safety, locking blades, a hybrid knife, two Phillips head screwdrivers, tweezers, and pliers.
Gerber makes a line of multi tools that are similar to the Leatherman that also has a lot of useful gear. The Gerber multi tool that cost in the $50 to $60 range comes with needle nose pliers, 3 flat blade screwdrivers, bottle opener, can opener, and a serrated knife. The multi tool features a nylon cover that is in included in order to keep dirt away and a lock for a safety feature. This item is 5 “long, weighs just over 8 ounces, and is made of stainless steel.
If you find that the more expensive multi tool is more then you need, there are some multi tools that are less expensive and more basic. For less than $10 you can get a multi too from Tool Basic that has 14 tools including a serrated knife and blades, pliers, basic screwdrivers, and needle nose pliers. Also for about $10 Mintcraft offers multi tool that weighs 12.2 ounces and comes in its own pouch. This knife has standard tools that include needle nose pliers, cutting blades, 2 screwdrivers, can opener, and a wire cutter.
